So I'm from Texas. Yes I know we arent the best.
But the past few weeks I've heard everything from "oh it won't happen here" to "not my problem"
The last week or so we've started seeing ICE here. And it's already starting to effect my work as a firefighter paramedic. And suddenly it's everyones problem. There's still a few deniers but luckily at least in my small circles here the awareness is starting to grow. Hopefully we continue to do so
Stay safe. Stay vigilant.

I'm in Connecticut, and the number of people who I have heard say things like "I didn't see it going this far" or "I wasn't expecting them to do that here" is mind boggling. This is the shit they said they were going to do. You'd have to have slept through the first round of Trump to not believe that this is where it was going.

If we hope for this madness to stop, we can't depend on the system to regin itself in. It is up to us common folk of the US to stand against this tyranny within our own country. There's a post of suggestions linked HERE that could possibly prove to be of some help in building the foundation needed for effective resistance.
Also check out this org too, as they're probably going to be vital as the powers that be employ more so-called "AI" to consolidate power: https://stopgenai.com (It is a survival-level, grassroots org, not an established NGO, so please don't judge it too harshly for being rough around the edges.)

Don't give up, we still got a way in win. It is up to us common folk of the US to stand against this tyranny, and we need as many people such as you and me to win this.
Currently, there is no real foundation for any effective resistance present for the common US folk to fall back on. There's a post of suggestions HERE that could possibly prove to be of some help in its formation ASAP.

Who cares if we will eventually win. The foundations have been damaged and we've been put so far behind that likely we will even if we depose Trump and make systematic actually impactful reform tomorrow still be in a position we basically can never recover from. Our economy is effectively irrepairably fucked for the rest of our life and regardless over which king we have our quality of life is going to quickly over the next several years begin a quality of life I frankly am not willing to endure.

Alcohol is pushed to subdue your anger at the government
I found this book at a “pay what you want” bookstore in Austin and I found it fascinating
A quote from it “Every fucking anarchist project I engage in is ruined or nearly ruined by alcohol. You set up a collective living situation and everyone is too drunk or stoned to do the basic chores, let alone maintain an attitude of respect. You want to create community, but after the show everyone just goes back to their rooms and drinks themselves to death. If it’s not one substance to abuse it’s a motherfucking other. I understand trying to obliterate your consciousness is a natural reaction to being born in alienating capitalist hell, but I want people to see what we anarchists are doing and say “Yeah, this is better than capitalism!”... which is hard to say if you can’t walk around without stepping on broken forty-ounce bottles. I’ve never considered myself straight-edge, but fuck it, I’m not taking it anymore!”

u/BellacosePlayer 49m ago
I know way too many people who turn to the bottle or the herb as a way to deal with the shit hand they're dealt, and shockingly very few of them actually do anything to get out of the hell they're in, and life just gets worse, which means pickling their brain even more, and they spiral ever downward.

On an unrelated note, I've watched some movies lately that are based on a true stories. They're quite inspiring, seeing how some actions worked and where things go wrong, and conjures up questions like "If it or similar were to take place now, how would it be adapted?" I'd like to share them here. Why? No particular reason, but watch them if you can:
- Army of Crime (2011)
- Defiance (2008)
- Edelweiss Pirates (2004)
- Deacons for Defense (2003)
- Free State of Jones (2016)

Minnesota is on the front lines of a phenomenon that is threatening to spread. What is happening there today can happen anywhere tomorrow. Thanks for drawing this in spite of the inner conflict, BN.
Anyone know if there's a legal fund or other resource that's working to defend / release the detained, or to keep the people who can't work afloat?

I'm a liberal in a red state. For the most part it's gone from loud vocal support of MAGA to nobody talks about it much, at least in my middle class area. It's easy to ignore stuff like this when you aren't so overtly targeted because of your state's size and political leaning.
I just don't understand the world anymore, we have armed govt going door to door harassing people, what has to happen for people to see the writing on the wall. This is history repeating itself in the worst way.

I'd be shocked if it happens here. I'm in Northwest Arkansas. The state is a Red stronghold, where Democrats don't even bother running. This corner in particular also hosts powerful corporate interests, being the HQ of companies like Wal-Mart and Tyson- companies that ship in immigrant workers, and presumably fund Republican campaigns so they look the other way.
Conservatives here are privileged to live in their fantasy world, rarely confronted by the consequences of their decisions. Homeless beggars and sincere protestors are offensive to their delicate sensibilities. They judge those people as they drive home from church, listening to Republican shills on AM radio before returning to their gated suburban neighborhood homes where Fox News continues prescribing beliefs to them.
The contrast between how the regime treats one of the Reddest and one of the Bluest states is stark. They're literally stoking a civil war, completely intentionally. They hate you for being disloyal to the king.

Also 'untrained' ? They're trained. The asshole that killed Renee Good had like 10 years of combined military/police/ice experience or whatever. They know what they're doing.
This untrained garbage is something they (milquetoast Dems who share the feature of spineless with many sea-based life forms) are pushing so they can use as a reform to keep ice around, but just 'trained' better. Like training can make a bunch of murderous thugs not murder people.
The untrained line is garbage from centrist assholes so they can plug their ears and get on with their centrists shit without having to make any changes, hoping it will pacify the ABOLISH ICE crowd.

I don't live in the usa. What is ICE and why everything I've heard about them sounds like a Nazi thing?
I literally have no idea about what is happening.
21
u/EarthToAccess 1h ago
No, no you've got the idea.
ICE is the "immigration police" basically. In the days of yesteryear it was the agency responsible for ensuring that actual, legitimate foreign criminals were deported out of country.
You can see the issue here.
15
u/DeuceMandago 1h ago edited 1h ago
Just adding on that it stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A lot of people don’t seem to know the actual name. They’ve also been around a lot longer than most people are aware of and are a part of the Department of Homeland Security. The customs side does some great things as far as ensuring dangerous contraband doesn’t get into our country (drugs, illegal firearms, etc.). Unfortunately, the immigration side has been weaponized by the current administration into what is essentially a very dangerous and very violent gang that doesn’t even seem all that concerned with illegal immigration anymore.
A lot of people make the comparison that ICE is to the Trump admin as the SS was to Hitler’s Nazi party. I actually think a more apt comparison is the SA, colloquially referred to as the Brown Shirts. This was a much larger part of the Nazi party that was mainly made up of alcoholic former soldiers and street thugs who would essentially run around terrorizing enemies of the party. As evil as the SS was, they were a lot more exclusive and organized than ICE appears to be.
I agree with everything you said, for the record. Just thought I’d add a little more information. In times like these, it helps to know your enemy.

Unfortunately the executive branch of the US government relies on leadership actually enforcing laws and can only be stopped by majority impeachment and conviction by both houses of the legislature, which is controlled by MAGA and the Democrats were so focused on being polite they lost their nonexistent teeth when they let Bush and SCOTUS take the 2000 election.

What you are doing is NOT frivolous.
It is necessary to call out the chosen absurdity that wants to present as "normal."
Remember this : fascism is a way of "reacting" to a world that embraces complexity.
For how dare WE all remember that we are just Humans; and not the delusions of superiority that the masked boys have imposed upon them.
They do this because they have yet to face the brutality necessary to silence them.
Works of art, such as yours and this subreddit, are their potential "non-violent" off-ramp, should they gather the courage to acknowledge it as such.
Do what you can while you can.
For the less tolerant of us shall unleash our rightful wrath for their chosen wrongness.
Be safe and well :)

I'm going to visit one of my mates in the states in a few months and he keeps saying how I should be fine because I'm white and with him
They already deported an Irish woman whose married to an American and in the early days detained a British backpacker for weeks. So the contingency I shared with him in case I don't come out the airport was legit
We are planning to go to a mexican bar as I should be there for the 1st world cup match (opened by Mexico) for the atmosphere. Which probably isn't smart. But I do see how that as a white guy I am much safer after I leave the airport

All the justification for their actions is build on a foundation of lies:
Undocumented Immigrant Offending Rate Lower Than U.S.-Born Citizen Rate
Studies show that immigration is not linked to higher levels of crime, but rather the opposite.
No, immigrants aren't more likely to commit crimes than US-born
Despite what Donald Trump and Fox News say, there’s no migrant crime wave in America.

This may sound silly but... these agents are not in good shape and are carrying defensive armor that is somewhat unwieldy I recommend everyone get in good cardiovascular shape learn to do at least several body squats some push-ups and if you can do a pull-up to get over a fence you can pretty much get away from 90% of the ice agents...

I watched videos of them taking kids into custody and cried. When I lived there, we walked to the park and school and just everywhere. It felt safe. Will it ever feel safe again? Will my kids grow up feeling safe?
I don't know. I know we're all trying to help however we can, but I also know I can't be in the crowds getting tear gassed while I'm 8.5 months pregnant.

I was an illegal immigrant in the US, in Idaho in the 90s. I’m also a white Canadian. I worked under the table jobs, and my coworkers at one place would constantly complain about the Latino illegals who also worked with us coming and taking jobs.
I would point out that I was illegal and taking a job and they would laugh and say “yeah that’s different”.
Guess what the difference was. It’s never been about immigration, it’s about whether you’re white.

Living in New Brighton and the situation is surreal. Work has been tossing me all around the Twin Cities and it's been really frustrating and scary having my head on a swivel at all times. Like I knew on some level I was privileged but having this happen in a city I live in really drives it home. I've been thinking about everyone in the apartment building I live in and what would happen if ICE came. It's just really scary but we have to all stick together to get through it.
2
u/SgtSilverLining 1h ago
I'm in the twin cities, and it's been surprising just how... mundane this all is. Like, yes there's protests, neighborhood watch, volunteering with local aid groups. But there's also when you're at home just cooking dinner. Playing with your dog. Taking a shower. The news (and history books) are all action and you never realize how much time you spend doing nothing in The Eternal Wait Time TM.
You feel like you should do something, you're scared, but throughout all of this you're still just living life. I keep having to remind myself I'm not a bad person for not working on things or being plugged into the news 24/7.

The leader of the Proud Boys is an ICE agent. A convicted seditionist. That's not poor hiring choices, that's a recruitment tool for the people he represents to join ICE and legally do what they've always wanted

I honestly have to say, I'm so glad they're hitting Minnesota this hard first because I feel like we're a state who has practice with sustained pushback. The winter makes us durable, the cops continually try to cut our legs out from under us, we're used to a long haul of resistance. If they were going to deploy massive resources and manpower somewhere, Minnesota is a really strong bet for making sure it pours into an endless, freezing icehole. Grateful to God for the stupidity of enemies.

I'd really like to join a "large white man with an open carry license " group to go sit in places like the black panthers are in Philly. Do any of these exist?
ICE isn't gonna fuck with five of me for a brown guy. I'm not a small lesbian woman or an old man, I'm tired of this shit. Sign me up.

What bothers me is that the rest of the country doesn't seem to give a fuck, or has been totally brainwashed by the right. More people should be joining the Black Panthers in unity.
Thank you for making this comic and stay safe!

I remember that first Saturday after 9/11 everyone wondering what SNL would be like or if it even was ok to do. And Rudy G* opened and said it’s ok to laugh. I just remember that as being a really big moment and I think it applies here.
*This is not an endorsement of RG.

Can i ask something as a non american? I am from Greece and if you know, we recently (almost 2 year anniversary is soon) had a massive train derailment and a few other corruption scandals. Our reaction was to protest, specifically make the biggest protests of our history and force a lot of our high politicians to quit and some even got arrested and tried for embezzlement. Why arent your people protesting? Why arent your people angry? Why arent you forcing YOUR politicians, the ones that YOUR country elected to step down, or to arrest them? Why are you allowing Trump and every other Trump to act like they are untouchable, when infact, they are very much touchable (not talking about shooting the dude, im talking about impeachment)? If impeachment isnt possible, then ask yourselves, why is your senate or parliament, whatever you call it, stacked in his favour?

Our people are protesting. En masse. In Minneapolis and nationwide.
If you don’t think anger, demands and action are happening here, I don’t know what to tell you. They are.
We know why our House and Senate are failing us. I assure you we’ve put some thought into this.

I also live in Minneapolis and connected with your story. But there was something about your drawings, coloring, all of it that hit me more deeply. I've been nodding when people say, "Fuck Ice," and saying back, meaning it. But it's hard for me to feel the sadness and hurt, which this comic helped me do. Thank you for that. It's been to....grieve?...transition....to this new audacity in the regime.

"Such slacktivism. Much wow." - MAGA view
The only ones would have any effect would be those who are reaching out to congressmen and to a lesser effect the protestors.
It's likely all these protests and posts would be termed as "from the illegals, their relatives or beneficiaries, who we can completely ignore".

Also in the twin cities, and it's insane how real this has become. Not just because it's now so close, I was in LA when they were there, I know and have been in regular contact with people in Chicago and Portland as well. But this is the largest ICE invasion of any city, and what they're doing is the next fucking level. It's hard to know if this is the culmination of all their bullshit or if this is the start of escalation and more cities come after.
Being part of the subreddits around us has helped and if people want to be tuned in a lot of user videos pop up every day of ICE doing insane and illegal shit constantly. r/TwinCities, r/Minneapolis, r/stpaul, r/minnesota, etc. are all subs you could check out.
We've seen highly toxic gas used in massive quantities (things that are war crimes were they be used on another populace and not their own citizens) and all right next to and among homes filled with families, there's already been reported at least one baby in the hospital from their gas that was not someone bringing their baby outside of the house. They use pepper spray directly into car vents if you're driving around them. They have kidnapped citizens and non-citizens alike, the ones they can't do anything with are often beaten and dumped, sometimes literally thrown out of a moving car. We have videos of handcuffed women entering port-o-potties with ICE agents following them. We have reports of even white people being detained and questioned and offered deals to turn in people they may know. They often don't care about your ID anymore. They've broken into someone's home without a warrant and shot that person (this one at least a judge ordered the release due to illegal search a seizure). They've killed Renee Good due to their own stupidity (NY Times has an excellent video breakdown that shows all angles and is on a free article, that man was not run down by the car at all).
But amongst it all has been a great support system. Lots of people stepping up and bringing families afraid of leaving their home for fear of capture some groceries/supplies, lots of education, groups of brave citizens showing up in crowds to wherever ICE is spotted to film and get loud, constant protests that have remained peaceful, including some clever ones like the constant vigil of insanely noisy citizens outside the hotels ICE has been known to be staying at to prevent them from getting sleep.
It's a wild ride, and now of course we have Trump threatening the insurrection act to send the military. Ironically, many people I've spoken to may actually feel SAFER with the military escorting ICE around because as bad as that is there's hope that the military will not be as blatant about being white supremacist bullies.

One thing that really genuinely sucks when shit like this goes down is wanting to support folks in my community who are out doing shows, but also like... that requiring me to go out into the community. Or ask about shows and the like.
Anxiiiiety.
Gotta love that what ICE is doing is literally killing American community-building. Kudos to those Nazi fucks.
My heart breaks.
From a nearly lifelong Twin Cities resident to another, be strong, be safe, keep going.
Oh, and FUCK ICE.

Christian Nationalism does not work. It never has and it never will. You simply cannot use the government to force people to convert and worship your deity.
They had everything a religious group could want. Tax free status, the assumption that any rando on the street is more likely than not a member.
Then they had to ruin it by throwing their values to the wayside at the chance to stick it to the undesirables. The collapse of organized religion is already happening, and none of those heretics can do anything to stop it now.

Big hug from another Minneapolitan. It's so scary but also so fierce to see all the beautiful bodies out in the streets. My faith in righteousness is galvanized. I love you, my neighbor, and I am here with and for you.
