There is truly nothing else like it. It's hard to even describe to people what it is, and pretty much impossible to do so while conveying any of the appeal.

Beneath the humor of the show lies an aching humanity. Wilson often finds such rich empathy for his subjects and can find profundity in the strangest or most banal events. The vacuum cleaner episode made me cry when I first watched it - now that I have a son with autism, I find so much beauty and hope in that episode.

It's always the paradox of these threads.

People upvote the ones they agree with. To agree with it they need to have seen it. So top answers are always ones a lot of people have seen. The actual 10/10's nobody knows wouldn't get any upvotes, because nobody would have seen it.

TURN

Was on during AMCs golden era of The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy, so it was definitely overshadowed. Takes places during the American Revolutionary War and focuses on the real life Culper spy ring. The actor who voices the current version of Call of Dutys "Ghost" is one of the main bad guys and is one of my favourite characters ever.

Everybody who I've convinced to watch it absolutely loved it.

488

they cancelled season 3, not because of ratings, not because of budget, not because of viewership. the reason is far more idiotic. the stupidest reason you can imagine, and double it down.

Per Deadline:

"Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch addressed the cancellation at the TCA summer press tour and admitted that the show’s audience was “too male” to fit into its new female-focused strategy.

“Counterpart was a great show, we had great partners in MRC and Justin is a great writer, but it was a very complicated show, a very male show. We had picked that show up and made a two season commitment before we’d honed in on this premium female strategy,” he said."

What the fuck is premium female strategy? this fucker thinks women are too stupid to follow the show? what the fuck does core female audience even mean? fuck you hirsch.

edit: here is the source, because it is hard to believe.

u/Loki-ra 8h ago

I feel like that's kinda part of it.

Like those 90s/00s sitcoms that it's parodying have absolute garbage plots, so with half the show being "that" and the other half being "the consequences of 'that' which you never got to see before", you kinda just have to accept that it's there to serve the meta plot so to speak.

Dead Like Me

173

u/NinjaInTheAttic 11h ago

Bryan Fuller is the king of cancelled too early shows. Dead Like Me is one of my all time favorite shows. I might be mistaken but I remember reading that it got cancelled because Showtime got a new CEO and he simply didn't like the show. It had nothing to do with ratings.

40

u/Maladaptive_Ace 8h ago edited 3h ago

as someone who worked on a Bryan Fuller show once (many years ago), the reason his shows get cancelled is not because of the creative aspect of the shows, but because Bryan Fuller is a narcissistic lunatic and difficult to work with

Reservation Dogs, it's only on Hulu but it's fantastic "slice of life" show depicting small-town Native American life in a stark but warm way. Great cast, great guest cast including Bill Burr, Lily Gladstone, Ethan Hawke, and Megan Mullally.

Utopia, British tv series. Mind blowing

31

u/TheFirstWarbird 10h ago

I’m surprised this is so far down. The series is so poignant, especially after the global pandemic. Might have to rewatch it again!!

Yes! I was looking for this. Such an incredible show. The fact that it got cancelled is maddening.

41

u/BrazilianMerkin 10h ago

And ended on a cliffhanger at that. Got canceled in the off season so they never had an opportunity to even try to cobble together a disappointing ending

Pantheon. Shit was top-tier

36

u/SpecialistArtPubRed 9h ago

If you like Pantheon, check out Scavengers Reign. It's another amazing Sci-Fi animated show that was cancelled too soon. The depiction of the alien world they're on is literally like nothing I've ever seen. It's so imaginative and interesting.

The Magicians. It might not be a 10 for most but it hits all the right spots for me nonetheless. Five seasons with a fitting end (even though I'd be the first to weep if the story ever continues in some capacity).

The first season can be a little bit rough to get through for some but it's definitely worthwhile. Be prepared for a wide range of emotions, laughter, trauma, world building as well as some of the best character interactions and character portrayals.

DEVS? I mean, somebody knows, because someone on reddit recommended it to me.

I agree, I think Nick Offerman being cast in an intellectual role was great - but his fans were expecting humor so it just never took off. But it’s some of the most compelling, smartest tv in years.

Slings & Arrows. Canadian show about a Shakespearean theatre troop with a brilliant but mentally unwell director. Also has Rachel McAdams in it. 3 brilliant 6-episode seasons that wraps up really nicely. I'd call it a dark comedy.

Maybe its just my social bubble but I stumbled upon Common Side Effects and I've been spreading the gospel ever since - nobody seemed to know about it. Such an amazing show - animation is 12/10, voice acting is incredible, and the story will get you hooked immediately

Forever. Crime procedural with Ioan Gruffudd as an immortal medical examiner, unsure why and what caused his immortality. Living with his adoptive son, whom is now older than he is and harassed by another immortal played by Burn Gorman.

Scavenger's Reign - Adult Swim produced. 1 season, and absolutely encapsulating and visually stunning. The most incredible world creation I've ever seen.

39

u/Legomoron 9h ago

100% Scavengers Reign. It probably has decent exposure among a subset of Reddit, but most people don’t even know it exists.

Same creators just did Common Side Effects, which IMO everyone should watch. It’s incredible.

Spaced. English comedy from the late 90s made by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar wright. Only had 2 series but was almost perfect. If you enjoyed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz etc you'll love Spaced, it's what kicked off their careers.

Norsemen (or Vikingane in Norwegian). It's a Norwegian viking comedy series. All the actors are Norwegian, and when they made the show, they recorded all the scenes twice. Once with the actors talking Norwegian. Then once more talking English with strong Norwegian accents and most of the jokes, puns and sayings being translated very directly. It's hilarious.

So if you want a funny little viking show with an extra pinch of linguistic weirdness, check it out.
